Results of the IMO Video Meteor Network - October 2004
======================================================
October was a typical autumn month, but at least at some observing sites
it presented good observing conditions and more than average clear nights.
Thanks to the Orionids, which do not belong to the really big showers but have
a broad maximum and produce a large number of meteor records thanks to the
long nights, the number of meteors increased again and fell only a bit short
of the August data.
Of special interest was the night of October 5-6, when there was a chance for
enhanced Draconid activity in the European night time. Weather permitted
observation at a few sites, but among the about 100 recorded meteors there was no
single Draconid. This supported the negative result of visual observations.
Another highlight was observed by AVIS on October 17, 02:06 UT in terms of a
single shooting star. The meteor of about -3 mag maximum brightness
distinguished itself not only by the unusual long duration (6 seconds within
the field of view alone), but also by the type of fragmentation. The meteor
head, which was well defined in the beginning, became more and more elongated
and finally spread over more than 10 degrees. The unusual appearance can be
seen best in the video sequence. The sporadic meteor (a re-entry of an
man-made object can almost be excluded due to the velocity) left a persistent
train, which was visible in subsequent meteor recordings for more than half an
hour. A few interested colleagues (Esko Lyytinen, Marco Langbroek, Pete Gural)
tried to compute a radiant and an orbit from this single station observation
based on certain assumptions. However, more accurate values would have
required recordings by another camera. Unfortunately, the meteor was in a bad
position or too faint for the cameras of the European Fireball Network (EN).
