Results of the AKM Video Meteor Network - October 2003

Will we have a strong winter after the hot summer? In late September, the
"summer of the century" provided for another time temperatures beyond 30 deg
centigrade in southern Germany, but only a few days later we had the first
snow fall. In the last October decade we even got a closed snow blanket for
half a day in Munich!
Overall, October was too cold and less perfect in central Europe than the
previous months. Especially in the first half of the month there were longer
spells of rainy weather, such that even the active observers gathered only
10 to 15 observing nights. The only exception was Joerg Strunk, who observed
in 21 nights with his automated camera. Overall we managed again to record
meteors in all nights of the month thanks to a good distribution of the cloud
gaps.
In Australia, there was an unusual long rain period, too, which prevented
observations for almost two weeks. Our Finish observer Ilkka Yrjola, however,
had a misfortune of another kind: The power supply of the replacement tube
failed only a few months after his first image intensifier died. Now he is
about to become an "unintensified" meteor observer.
In October, Joerg Strunk could demonstrate the power of the Mintron cameras
again. In the presence of major showers or when the sky is illuminated by the
bright moon, the gap between his camera and image-intensified cameras with
respect to the number of recorded meteors reduces from a factor of three to a
value well below two. On October 23 he managed to detect an amazing 110
meteors with Mincam3! Interestingly, Joerg is still more successful with the
8mm f/0.8 lens than with the 6mm lens at the same f-stop. In the future he
intends to do a test by pointing both cameras in the same direction to
investiage the possible influence of the different field of view.
